Teaching
When teaching, I seek to train students to not only have a greater knowledge of a subject area, but also to develop curiosity, and critical and analytical thinking skills, so that they may engage in lifelong learning. I have found that in order to achieve these goals, it is imperative for students to be actively engaged with not only the material, and the instructor, but also the other students. It is my job as the instructor to facilitate this active engagement. Therefore, I use a two part pedagogy that (1) builds active learning techniques, such as simulations, class discussions, role-playing games, and group exercises, into the structure of class, and (2) creates an inviting classroom culture through personalized interaction with students so they feel comfortable to discuss and share ideas.
I have taught courses at the University of North Texas, Texas Woman's University, Maastricht University (the Netherlands), and the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. These courses have run the gamut in terms of size, diversity, level of advancement, and content. Specifically, I have taught introductory courses concerning Comparative politics, American politics, and Texas politics. I have also taught more advanced courses focusing on political parties, identity and migration, West European politics, European Union politics, and research methods.
